To achieve the ideal body image, men are affected differently than women. Unlike women, the body image in the media such as magazines and television portray men as “muscular football players”. Women tend to try to be smaller and skinner, whereas men try to be bigger and stronger built. The effects may be positive in which men are encouraged increasing exercise and working out routines, and eat right. But the effects may be negative when men become obsessive with his body image by over exercising or take steroids. “In Australia’s 2008 National Survey of Young Australians, 45 percent of young men are unhappy with their body, 17 percent are dieting, and three percent are using muscle-enhancing drugs like steroids”. Also, the sales of men’s cosmetics and grooming industry has exponentially increased, which shows that men have increased concerned for their body image. (Posted by: Jeanie)
